Ranks, Skill Tree & Classes Guide
Wonderland’s September 2026 update added a full progression layer on top of the escape loop: Ranks, a Skill Tree, and permanent Classes. This guide explains how each system works based on the official update notes, and how to use them together. Everything in the “How it works” sections is from the official ScaryPlay Discord #update-logs (September 2, 2026); strategy advice is our own interpretation and marked as such.
Ranks — how XP works
How it works (official):
- You earn XP by banking lumins, going deep and surviving chases.
- There are 50 ranks, grouped into six named bands: Wanderer, Explorer, Seeker, Survivor, Pathfinder and Veteran.
- XP is never bought and never spent — it only tracks your progression. Rank gates in the Skill Tree can never be skipped with money.
- Your rank shows on your nameplate so other players can see it.
- The Ladder page (opened from the rank chip) shows every rank and what it unlocks.
- The XP Board in the lobby ranks the server’s top players.
How to rank up faster (our advice, based on the three official XP sources):
- Bank lumins regularly. XP comes from banking, not just carrying — don’t hoard a huge bag and risk dying with it. Cash in often.
- Go deep. Depth contributes to XP, so push further into the park before banking when you can do it safely.
- Survive chases. Escaping a chase is an XP source in itself — breaking line of sight and finishing the chase QTEs correctly now pays twice (survival + XP).
The Skill Tree — four branches
The Skill Tree has 21 upgrade families across four branches: Haul, Breath, Nerve and Charms.
How it works (official):
- Nodes cost Gems to unlock.
- Each node opens at a rank requirement, and that rank gate is never purchasable.
- Announced upgrade families include: Broad Back, Quick Recovery, Sure Grip, Deep Pockets, Lungs, Second Breath, Chest Lungs, Thick Skin, Spring Heels, Field Medic, Sure Feet and Watchman.
- Charms are wearable tree upgrades — they live in the Charms branch and occupy charm slots.
- Charm slots are handed out by rank — the higher your rank, the more charms you can equip.
How to spend (our advice):
- Haul upgrades (Broad Back, Deep Pockets) raise your lumin carry capacity — the update also added a per-player lumin carry capacity bonus hook, so carry upgrades compound with it.
- Breath upgrades (Lungs, Second Breath, Chest Lungs) improve stamina and recovery — stamina is the core survival resource, so these help every single run.
- Nerve upgrades (Thick Skin, Field Medic, Watchman) are defensive and awareness picks — good once you regularly push into deep chases.
- Because nodes cost Gems and rank gates are free, rank up first, then spend Gems — there is no point holding Gems for a node you can’t open yet.
Classes — permanent loadouts
How it works (official):
- There are four permanent, gem-priced classes you wear into a run.
- Your class shows as a tag on your nameplate and as a worn cosmetic.
- Your class item sits in your lobby hotbar and refreshes at every stop during a run.
How to choose (our advice):
- Classes are paid in Gems, which you earn by ranking up and running — try the free systems first (Ranks + Skill Tree) before committing Gems to a class.
- A class item that refreshes at every stop effectively gives you a reusable tool each level, which pairs well with the Wonder Shop’s one-run tools (Map, Stopwatch, Hammer, Minigun).
What about the new levels and monsters?
The same update added 2 new levels and 2 new monsters and gave Wonder & Wander a proper boss health bar. The developers have not named the new monsters yet, so we don’t have dedicated survival pages for them — as soon as official names and behaviors are confirmed, we’ll add monster pages and chases guides. Nearly all QTEs were removed except the key smash, so older guides’ QTE advice now applies to fewer encounters.
Quick checklist
- Check the Ladder (rank chip) to see what your next rank unlocks
- Bank lumins often, go deep when safe, and survive chases for XP
- Spend Gems on Skill Tree nodes only when you meet the rank gate
- Watch your charm slots — they grow with rank
- Try classes only after your Gem income is steady
